How to measure for a retractable awning.

Before we build your custom awning, take a moment to ensure a seamless fit on your patio wall:

  • Confirm Space: Check wall height and door clearance.
  • Select Size: Measure desired width and projection depth.
  • Match Style: Test physical fabric samples in real sunlight.

Mounting Space & Height

Do not measure only the door/window height; confirm flat wall space for the cassette and brackets.

  • Min. Height: At least 2.5 m (8'2") from patio floor to brackets.
  • Door Clearance: At least 25-30 cm (10-12") flat space above outswing door frames.
  • Obstacles: Check for gutters, fascia, lamps, security cameras, and vents.

Shading Width

Measure the actual shade zone you want protected, not just the glass opening.

  • Optimal Coverage: Extend width 30-50 cm (12-20") wider than the frame on each side.
  • Bracket Room: Leave flat wall space at the outer edges for heavy-duty end brackets.
  • Note: Contact BESITSOL before checkout for oversized spans or custom widths.

Projection (Extension Depth)

Projection is how far the awning extends outward. Choose the size that fits your living zone:

  • 1.5 m - 2.0 m (5' - 6'7"): Balconies, narrow walkways, and small storefronts.
  • 2.5 m - 3.0 m (8'2" - 9'10"): Standard decks, residential patios, and outdoor dining.
  • 3.5 m (11'6"): Deep commercial terraces, hospitality venues, and pool decks.
  • Clearance: Ensure the extended arm path clears railings, columns, grills, and furniture.

Wall Structure & Substrate

Awnings are heavy structural systems and must mount into a suitable load-bearing framework.

  • Approved Surfaces: Solid concrete, solid brick, or structural wood studs.
  • Pro Review Required: Hollow walls, cracked surfaces, stucco over foam, or elevated installs.
  • Logistics: Check site access for freight delivery, ladders, and heavy lifting.
